A vessel berthed about 100 meters offshore from Kai Tak Cruise Terminal suddenly spewed thick smoke from its engine room on Friday night, drawing crowds of onlookers as marine police and fireboats rushed to the scene.
The incident happened around 9pm yesterday when passers-by spotted heavy smoke rising from the boat in the waters opposite the terminal. Police received multiple reports, and the marine police were dispatched immediately.
Firefighters boarded the burning vessel and brought the blaze under control.
The male owner complained of feeling unwell and was taken conscious to United Christian Hospital for treatment.
Two other people at the scene were checked by paramedics and released without needing hospital care.
Social media quickly filled with photos and videos showing fireboats spraying water and police patrol craft standing by.
The exact cause of the engine-room fire is still under investigation.
