A 48-year-old man died on Monday afternoon after being struck by a heavy object while working at the West New Territories Landfill extension site in Nim Wan, Tuen Mun, in what police have classified as an industrial accident.
The worker, surnamed Yeung, was inside a rebar-bending area around 4.15pm when he was suddenly hit and knocked unconscious.
Colleagues called emergency services, and he was rushed to Tuen Mun Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 6pm.
A postmortem will determine the exact cause of death.
The Environmental Protection Department, which oversees the landfill extension project, said the man was employed by a subcontractor.
Director of Environmental Protection Samuel Chui Ho-kwong expressed deep sadness over the incident and confirmed that staff are reaching out to the family to offer condolences and support, while the contractor will provide emergency compassionate payment.
Both the Environmental Protection Department and Labour Department have launched immediate investigations, and the main contractor has been ordered to submit a full report within seven days.
