The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has invited the first female Dean of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong to join a task force in a bid to establish Hong Kong’s third medical school.

Rosie Young Tse-Tse, also the former senior pro-vice-chancellor of HKU, has been invited to serve as a special adviser to the HKUST’s Medical Education Taskforce to review the university’s proposed curriculum of the medical school.

Meanwhile, nearly all overseas members of the university’s Council Advisory Group visited Hong Kong to have a first in-person meeting, including Ara Darzi from Imperial College London, David Ho from Columbia University and Wong Tien-Yin from Tsinghua University, while professor Roger Kornberg from Stanford University joined the meeting virtually.
During the meeting, the advisory group members talked about the benefits and feasibility of a four-year graduate-entry medical program.

“Members emphasized that by integrating new scientific platforms like AI and other technologies early in medical education, students can become tech-savvy clinicians prepared to drive innovations in medicine and therapeutics, while transforming healthcare delivery,” the university said.

“With HKUST’s strong foundation in science and technology, particularly in AI, biomedical, and engineering sciences, the university can play a vital role in the future of medicine and to Hong Kong’s development as an international hub for medical training, research, and innovation,” it added.

Group chairman Leong Che-Hung said HKUST could leverage its strengths in AI and cutting-edge research, adding that “integrating innovative medical training approaches will undoubtedly prepare the next generation of doctors to lead breakthroughs in patient care.”

“With the Council Advisory Group’s expert guidance, I believe HKUST’s proposed medical school will address local healthcare needs while positioning Hong Kong at the forefront of global healthcare innovation,” he said.
