The announcement on Wednesday saw eight e-wallets to activate this feature.
Apart from the Hong Kong e-wallets, the other four include Bangkok Bank Mobile Banking and K PLUS in Thailand, NAVER Pay in South Korea, as well as ICBC Mobile Banking (ICBC Pay) in Malaysia.
Starting today, users of these e-wallets can directly use them for payment at merchants in mainland China, including shopping malls, chain stores, and restaurants, by simply binding their UnionPay cards within the mobile app to scan WeChat Pay QR codes for transactions.
"This partnership will open access to the extensive merchant network for PayMe users, who have benefited from the accelerated integration of consumption, daily living, and business activities in the Greater Bay Area," said Brad Jones, Head of PayMe by HSBC.
