The Observatory issued the Amber Rainstorm Warning just after 8.30 am, warning of flooding in some low-lying and poorly-drained areas. The Labour Department also told construction workers and contractors to pay attention to electrical safety in the workplace.
A trough of low pressure is bringing showers and squally thunderstorms to the coastal areas of Guangdong. Locally, more than 30 millimeters of rainfall was recorded over most parts of the territory within the past few hours.
Under the persistent influence of a trough of low pressure, there will still be showers and thunderstorms over Guangdong in the next couple of days. With the trough of low-pressure weakening, showers will ease off over the region next Monday, said the weather watchdog.
However, the Observatory forecasted that another trough of low pressure is expected to form over the northern part of southern China and edge closer to the coast of southern China midweek next week. The weather will be unsettled with thundery showers over the region once again.
