A man was arrested in relation to three counts of impersonation scams in Mong Kok on Sunday.
Officers received a report from an older woman on July 3, 2023, stating that she received a call from a man claiming to be a law enforcement officer from the mainland who said that her bank account was involved in a criminal case on the mainland.
She was told to provide him with her bank account information and password for an investigation.
After she had handed over the information, she later found that 420,000 yuan were taken from her account, leading her to contact the police for assistance.
After the Tseung Kwan O police district conducted an investigation, they arrested an 18-year-old local man named Chan in an apartment unit in Mong Kok yesterday (Feb 19).
He was arrested on suspicion of obtaining property by deception.
Chan was also found to be related to two more cases of the same type, for a total of HK$1.65 million in losses incurred in the three cases.
He is currently remanded in police custody.
