One fraudster arrested for involvement in "guess-who-I-am" scam

Police were alerted to Tsing Yi after an elderly woman reported that she was suspected of having been scammed by a fraudster who claimed to be her grandchild.

An elderly woman in her 80s was contacted by a stranger yesterday (Nov 23), who claimed to be her grandchild and arrested for assaulting someone, urgently requesting bail.

Today at noon, the fraudster contacted the elderly woman again, requesting HK$30,000 for bail and asking to meet at Maritime Square to hand over the cash.

The elderly woman realized she was being scammed and immediately contacted the police with the help of her daughter.

The police, upon investigation, verified that her grandchild was still fine and had not been arrested, confirmed that it was a scam, and began to plan an operation to catch the fraudster.

As the plan for the meet-up continued, the police, who had laid an ambush, came out and arrested the fraudster as she came to pick up the funds.

It is understood that the 26-year-old arrested woman, claiming to be a bar waitress, was given cash rewards to help a syndicate pick up the money.

She is currently remanded in police custody assisting in the investigation.

The police are also currently looking for other people involved in the cases.
