In response to climate change, the Government is committed to promoting low-carbon transformation in Hong Kong and adopts multi-pronged measures to encourage different sectors to reduce carbon emissions and save energy together. Promoting such messages to the young people is essential to the initiative. The Energy Saving Championship Scheme 2022 – Competition for Students organised by the Environment and Ecology Bureau and the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) encourages young people to unleash their infinite creativity and imagination in energy saving and wider adoption of renewable energy in an effort to strive for carbon neutrality together. The competition attracted more than 300 participants from tertiary institutions, secondary schools and primary schools. Upon assessment, winning teams for the Primary School Category and the Secondary and Post-secondary School Category were selected. In an experience sharing session held on July 6, the winning teams of the Secondary and Post-secondary School Category shared their project ideas and their endeavours to work together for achieving carbon neutrality in Hong Kong by 2050.

“Smart Cozy” is an energy saving system designed by the awardee of Hanson Grand Award especially for air-conditioners in schools. As the name suggests, it applies temperature sensors and smart blades to control the direction of cooled air flow in order to provide a more comfortable learning environment with even temperature. Its smart switch can also control an air conditioner remotely to pre-cool a room before use and to have it switched off automatically when the room is not in use, thus saving energy. In addition, “Smart Cozy” includes a light sensor installed behind the dust filter and a LED lamp that can alert users when the filter needs cleaning. The system also provides SMS reminders to users for regular checking on air conditioners to maintain their effective performance.
