According to Google Hong Kong, the annual ranking reflects the most searched keywords of 2025. The results show that AI-related topics accounted for four of the top 10 searches, split evenly between the mainland and the United States. Alongside DeepSeek at the top, Grok ranked sixth, Doubao seventh and Google Gemini eighth.

The second-most searched keyword was Wang Fuk Court, following the devastating five-alarm fire that broke out at the Tai Po housing estate on November 26 last year.
The blaze resulted in 161 deaths, including one firefighter, with another 79 people injured. Authorities are continuing their investigation, with the Independent Commission Against Corruption and the police arresting multiple suspects on suspicion of manslaughter and of falsely claiming that the fire alarm had not been deactivated during maintenance work.

Celebrity deaths also featured prominently in the rankings. Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu, known to many as Big S, ranked third after her death last year at the age of 48 from influenza-related pneumonia. Hong Kong singer-songwriter Khalil Fong Tai-tung placed fourth. His cause of death was not disclosed. He was 41.

Technology and entertainment rounded out the rest of the list. Apple’s Apple iPhone 17 ranked fifth, fueled in part by public discussion over a new “cosmic orange” color option for the Pro and Pro Max models that drew widespread online attention. Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok, developed by a company under Elon Musk, also featured in the top 10.

Television and film continued to attract strong interest from Hong Kong audiences. TVB drama “The Queen of News 2” ranked ninth, after sweeping nine awards at the TVB Anniversary Awards 2025, while mainland animated blockbuster “Ne Zha 2” placed tenth, with cumulative box office takings reaching 15.446 billion yuan, or about US$2.2 billion.
Google Hong Kong’s 2025 top trending searches underscore a year shaped by rapid advances in artificial intelligence, major local tragedies and the passing of cultural icons, reflecting both the city’s technological curiosity and its collective moments of grief and fascination.
