The government was planning to revive the night economy by collaborating with shopping malls to extend the opening hours and organize more events, according to sources.
Deputy Financial Secretary Michael Wong Wai-lun, who was said to be taken on to draft the proposal, has stated on social media that the government is studying different measures to simulate the night economy.
It was learned that the authorities also plan to organize various activities at the harborfront to achieve the goal.
Simon Wong Kit-lung, the chairman of the Institute of Dining Professionals, suggested authorities disburse 50 percent off “night market consumption vouchers” that can be used only from 6 pm to 2 am to encourage citizens to enjoy dinners, movies and shopping after work.
He added that some restaurants might lack of manpower to extend their business hours, but it is worth a try to facilitate the residents going out at night and simulate the night economy.
