Two more community vaccination centers will reopen this Friday, at Education Bureau Kowloon Tong Education Services Center and Kowloon Bay Sports Centre. They will offer BioNTech jabs, Secretary for the Civil Service Patrick Nip Tak-kuen said on a radio program on Monday.
The number of Hospital Authority general outpatient clinics offering Sinovac jabs will also increase from two to 24.
With the increased manpower, the number of jabs administered daily starting Tuesday will be 30 percent more than on New Year's Day, Nip said. He asked those who wish get vaccinated to make their bookings online through the government's designated website.
The surge in inoculations came as Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor earlier announced that people must have at least one dose to enter restaurants and leisure facilities starting on February 24.
Nip, the minister in charge of the city's Covid-19 vaccination program, said the vaccination rate for the elderly aged 80 or above in the city is only around 23 percent at present
He stressed that past experiences showed that most of the elderly in the city are fit to receive the vaccination, calling on more of them to get the jab.
Meanwhile, Nip said the government’s advisory panel on Covid-19 vaccines will in this week consider the lowering of the age threshold for children under the age of 12 to receive the Sinovac jab.
