Johannes Chan Man-mun stepped down as an adjunct professor for the Faculty of Law at the University of Hong Kong.
Chan, 62, who was original a chair professor, didn't extend his employment contract with the university as it expired by the end of June, according to reports.
It was understood that Chan didn't extend his contract due to family issues, said sources from the faculty members.
So far there was no teaching arrangements made for him in the next school year, sources added.
Chan has yet to comment on the matter publicly.
Chan was appointed as an Honorary Senior Counsel in 2003, the first and only one in the city. He also led the Faculty of Law of HKU between 2002 and 2014 as the Dean of the Faculty, making him the longest serving dean of the faculty.
He was offered a two-year contract by the university in 2018, when he was 60, and the contract expired by the end of this June.
