A man stabbed a policeman and then stabbed himself to death outside Sogo department store in Causeway Bay.
Both were sent to Ruttonjee hospital, with the attacker certified dead at 11.20pm.
The attack happened at around 10pm. Two policemen from the police tactical unit were standing outside Sogo on East Point Road when a suspect, who wore glasses, approached from behind.
He used a knife to stab one of the officers, injuring his left scapula. There was chaos when everyone in the surrounding ran. At one point a gun and pepper spray were pointed at the suspect. Then the man plunged the knife into his own chest. He bled profusely and lost a lot of blood.
Both the assailant and the policeman collapsed onto the ground before they were sent to hospital. The policeman was conscious.
Police said on their Facebook page that the left side of the officer's back was "seriously wounded."
Police Commissioner Raymond Siu Chak-yee headed to the scene before midnight.
Chief Executive Carrie Lam condemned the attack on the police officer. In a statement, she also hit out at a number of other illegal acts that took place yesterday, saying they were clearly intended to "challenge the SAR government's authority."
