An insurance broker was sentenced to 41 months in jail for using a hairdryer on her boyfriend's private parts and poured boiling water onto his thighs.
Mak Hoi-ching, aged 39 years, was earlier convicted of four counts of wounding with intent by deputy district judge June Cheung Tin-ngan for attacking her 32-year-old boyfriend X in 2018.
She also faced a count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm but was acquitted because X could not specify any event constituting the charge.
Her lawyer told the judge that Mak has been under immense pressure after broad media coverage of this case, she has to see the psychiatrist regularly. She has also tried to commit suicide during trial.
However, the judge said although Mak has suicidal thoughts, her psychiatrist and clinical psychologist both said Mak has not shown signs of mental illness.
“After being convicted, she still denied responsibility while seeing the psychologist and psychiatrist, saying X is the one doing all this to himself,” the judge added, saying Mak has no remorse or guilt.
X was also diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder after the incident, where X has suffered from insomnia and inattention. The judge said although X was not suffering from serious psychological or mental problems, this will surely leave a mark in X.
The judge said considering the seriousness of the case, only an immediate custodial sentence would be suitable, sentencing Mak to 41 months in jail.
