A 49-year-old man reported that his Rolex watch worth about HK$1 million was stolen from a locker at a gym in Kwun Tong earlier this week, according to Sing Tao Probe, a sister publication of The Standard.
The watch, a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 116506 commonly known as the “ice blue Daytona,” was allegedly taken while the man was working out at a branch of Pure Fitness at Manulife Place on Monday afternoon (Mar 9).
The victim said he arrived at the gym at about 3.11pm and went to the men’s locker room. He removed the watch and placed it in a hidden compartment of his backpack before locking the bag inside a locker.
The backpack also contained a wallet with about HK$20,000 in cash.
After working out for more than two hours, the victim returned to the locker room at about 5.30pm and found the contents of his backpack had been disturbed. The Rolex watch was missing, but the wallet and cash were untouched.
Police said they received a report at about 6pm on Monday from a man who claimed that his Rolex watch had been stolen from a locker while he was exercising at the gym.
The case has been classified as theft and is being handled by officers from the Sau Mau Ping criminal investigation team.
The victim said he immediately informed gym staff, who assisted him in calling police. Officers later checked surveillance footage from areas outside the locker room, as there were no cameras installed inside.
He said he had noticed a man standing behind him while he was using the locker and suspected the person might have seen him enter the locker code.
According to watch trading platforms, the “ice blue Daytona” is a highly sought-after Rolex model, with market prices ranging from about HK$680,000 to over HK$1 million.
