The Hong Kong Observatory upgraded the rainstorm warning signal to Red at 5.55am on Monday, prompting the Education Bureau to announce the suspension of classes for all morning and whole-day schools.
Schools are required to implement contingency measures and arrange staff to care for students who may have already arrived on campus. Students should only be allowed to return home when it is safe to do so.
The Observatory said a strong thundery rain area is approaching Hong Kong, with heavy showers and squally thunderstorms expected in the morning, sometimes heavy at times. Members of the public are advised to stay alert and check the latest weather updates before heading out.
