Hong Kong Customs arrested three people and seized suspected drugs worth about HK$4.2 million at Hong Kong International Airport on Wednesday.
A 42-year-old male passenger arriving from Kuala Lumpur via Singapore was found with 4 kilograms of suspected cannabis buds disguised as food in his checked luggage. A search also revealed about 2 grams of suspected methamphetamine and several tablets of suspected nimetazepam on his person.
Following a follow-up investigation, officers arrested a 33-year-old woman and a 34-year-old man at the airport, seizing an additional 17kg of suspected cannabis buds from the woman's suitcase.
The man has been charged with two counts of trafficking in a dangerous drugs. The woman and the other man have been jointly charged with one count of the same offence. They will appear at West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts on Thursday.
Customs said it will continue to step up enforcement against drug trafficking through intelligence analysis. It reminded the public that trafficking in a dangerous drug carries a maximum penalty of a HK$5 million fine and life imprisonment.
