Marking Bruce Lee’s 85th birth anniversary, the Bruce Lee Club announced on Tuesday that it is partnering with Prudential Centre in Jordan to install a commemorative plaque inside the mall, honoring the site where Bruce Lee and his family once lived.
The Lee family once lived at Katherine Building—now the Prudential Centre and Hotel—for nearly 30 years. After returning to Hong Kong from studying in the United States, Bruce Lee often stayed there and it was the place he lived the longest in his life.
Bruce Lee Club chairman Wong Yiu-keung said the plaque will be the first stop of phase two of the “Bruce Lee Heritage Trail.”
Wong said that the government had funded phase one with HK$1.3 million, and Prudential Centre will cover the cost of this plaque, noting that no government funding was sought for this event.
“It is still in the planning stage, but the hope is to create more than just a ‘monument,’” he said, noting the plan includes textual explanations and photos of the former residence, as well as adding versions in different languages and QR codes.
The chairman noted that many episodes of Bruce Lee’s life—such as dating and fights—happened around Prudential Centre, which could attract more visitors, echoing Hong Kong Tourism Board Chairman Peter Lam Kin-ngok's call to leverage Hong Kong cinema to boost tourism.
