Woman jailed for 40 days after smuggling HK$17,900 worth of cigarettes through Lo Wu

A 51-year-old woman has been sentenced to 40 days in prison and fined HK$4,000 for attempting to smuggle HK$17,900 worth of untaxed cigarettes through Lo Wu Control Point.

Customs officers intercepted the woman on October 12 and found 4,381 duty-not-paid cigarettes in her personal luggage during inspection. The cigarettes carried a duty value of approximately HK$14,400.

The passenger had failed to declare the tobacco products to customs officials, violating the Dutiable Commodities Ordinance. She was formally charged and appeared at Fanling Magistrates' Courts on Wednesday, where she received the prison term and financial penalty.
