The Standby Signal, No. 1 will be issued on Monday (Nov 10) in the afternoon as Tropical Cyclone Fung-wong will enter within 800 kilometers of Hong Kong tomorrow.
According to the present forecast track, Fung-wong will turn northwards over the northeastern part of the South China Sea. It will be closest to the city on Wednesday (Nov 12), skirting at about 400 kilometres east of Hong Kong.
The Observatory said it will assess the need to issue higher tropical cyclone warning signals on Tuesday (Nov 11), depending on the intensity change of Fung-wong, its distance from Hong Kong and the local wind conditions.
Fung-wong will move towards the vicinity of Taiwan afterwards, and will weaken gradually under the influence of the northeast monsoon.
Under the combined effect of Fung-wong and the northeast monsoon, it will be windy and slightly cooler with swells over the coast of Guangdong in the next few days. Temperatures in the urban areas will fall to around 20 degrees in the middle of this week.
