A new public plaza dedicated to Hong Kong’s maritime heritage is set to open in the third quarter of 2025, thanks to a HK$24 million donation from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.
The Hong Kong Maritime Museum Jockey Club Anchor Plaza, located near Central Piers 9 and 10, was officially completed at a ceremony today attended by government officials and Club representatives, including the Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law Shuk-pui, Club Steward Nicholas Hunsworth, Club Steward Andrew Weir, and Hong Kong Maritime Museum Chairman Richard Hext.
The plaza’s centerpiece is the massive 36-ton anchor from the Seawise Giant, once the world’s largest cargo ship.
Alongside this historic artifact, the space features an innovative ArtTech pavilion with interactive displays, offering visitors an immersive journey through Hong Kong’s maritime past and marine biodiversity.
Designed as a free-access gathering spot, the plaza is expected to attract up to two million visitors annually.
Nicholas Hunsworth, a steward of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, emphasized the project’s role in preserving the city’s cultural legacy.
He stated that the waterfront landmark would deepen public appreciation of Hong Kong’s maritime history while providing a vibrant space for locals and tourists.
The pavilion combines modern architecture with cutting-edge technology, including short films showcasing the evolution of Hong Kong’s harbor and advancements in shipbuilding. Visitors can explore interactive exhibits that highlight the city’s connection to the sea.
The project, part of the 2022 HKSAR Community Projects List, reflects the Club’s commitment to community development. As with all its charitable initiatives, funding is generated through the Club’s unique integrated business model, which supports racing, responsible wagering, and social contributions.
Once open, the plaza will serve as both an educational hub and a scenic retreat along Victoria Harbour, further enriching Hong Kong’s cultural landscape.
