Hong Kong plans to integrate blockchain technology and high-value maritime services as part of a broader initiative to develop a smart port, an official said, after the city’s legislature approved a HK$200 million funding package to support the project.
The government-led platform aims to enhance cargo handling and logistics value-added services, Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan said in a radio interview.
Chan said Hong Kong has ranked fourth globally for several years in container-handling efficiency, based on an index that measures not only throughput but also service quality and operational performance.
Separately, Chan confirmed that lawmakers have approved funding for a study of the Northern Metropolis Highway project, with cost and timeline adjustments that include shortening the underground section to five kilometers.
On developing Hong Kong’s low-altitude economy, Chan said the second round of pilot project applications will open in the first half of 2026. She added that the government is actively preparing for the next phase, with ongoing legislative progress allowing for more comprehensive testing and a clearer long-term road map.
