The Transport and Logistics Bureau (TLB) shared the government's efforts in promoting and facilitating maritime decarbonization, which included developing a green shipping corridor, in order to consolidate and enhance the city's status as an international maritime center.
In his keynote speech at a symposium on maritime decarbonization and sustainability held by the Hong Kong Shipowners Association (HKSOA) on Wednesday, Under Secretary for TLB Liu Chun-san noted that around 700 applications have been approved to incentivize Hong Kong-registered ships for adopting a green scheme.
He said the government is aiming to develop Hong Kong into a green maritime fuel bunkering center and a focal point for green maritime fuel trade, while also providing ship-to-ship liquefied natural gas bunkering service regularly.
As the Code of Practice for green methanol bunkering is expected to be ready in around three months, Liu hoped that the first demonstration could be conducted soon.
He added that the government is identifying suitable ports for developing a green shipping corridor with Hong Kong, and a collaborative platform will be established to facilitate business development and catalyze the formation of a green maritime fuel supply chain and green shipping ecosystem in the city.
Liu also emphasized that Hong Kong stood ready to navigate alongside the maritime partners and pilot the industry toward greater prosperity in the global trend of maritime decarbonization.
