The Fulbright exchange program for China and Hong Kong will be terminated under the executive order signed by US President Donald Trump overnight.
The executive order would involve future exchanges for participants traveling from and to China or Hong Kong, according to the White House statement.
The programs for Hong Kong and Macau are handled by the United States Consulate-General of Hong Kong and Macau and the Department of State.
It has operated for 17 years in Hong Kong. In the 2019-2020 program, 10 scholars were chosen for lectures and to undertake research in the US for four to 10 months in arts, humanities and social sciences. Nine of the scholars were women.
The Fulbright Program is the US Government’s flagship international education exchange and is supported by the Department of State and partner countries around the world.
Since 1946, the program has provided more than 318,000 participants from over 155 countries with the opportunity to study, teach, and conduct research; exchange ideas; and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.
