Hang Seng Index rallies 700 points on first trading day of 2026

Hong Kong stocks rallied to the highest in more than one month on the first trading day of 2026, led by tech stocks.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index jumped by 707 points, or 2.76 percent to 26,338 points by noon. The market turnover was HK$140 billion. 

The Hang Seng Tech Index grew 4 percent to 5,736 points with all constituents rising.

The best performer among blue chip stocks was Baidu (9888), whose shares went up 9.4 percent
