Macau police arrest 3 Hongkongers in separate fraud cases totalling over $24m

Macau's Judiciary Police have arrested three Hong Kong residents in two fraud cases involving over HK$24 million in total.

The first case involves a married couple, aged 69 and 48, who registered an investment company in Hong Kong. They met a non-Macau resident man in 2023, showed him a cooperation agreement and photos with a casino VIP room, and persuaded him to invest with a promised 3 percent monthly return on principal.

The victim invested 2 million yuan in November 2023 and received HK$66,000 two months later. He increased his investment, reaching a total of HK$28 million by December 2024 while receiving about HK$4 million in returns. After no returns since April last year, he reported it.

Police found the couple's company had no cooperation or business with the VIP room and no actual operations. They were intercepted at the Barrier Gate on Wednesday afternoon.

The second suspect, a 65-year-old Hong Kong man working as a cleaner, allegedly provided a mainland payment platform account to receive and transfer funds for a fraud syndicate. His account was linked to fraud cases. He was arrested at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge on Wednesday.

All three face forgery and money laundering charges and have been transferred to prosecutors.
