FINE ART ASIA 2024 - Bridging Cultures – Expanding Collectible Categories

Fine Art Asia 2024, Asia’s leading fine art fair, is returning to Hong Kong this fall. The fair is going to take place at Hall 1C, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, from Friday 4 to Monday 7 October 2024, with a Private Preview on Thursday 3 October.

Successfully entering its 19th edition, Fine Art Asia has been striving to provide a vibrant platform and support cultural exchange in the arts between the East and the West. This year, the fair will introduce a dedicated sector focusing on ink art. It aims to expand the vision and boundaries of contemporary ink art while promoting the traditional culture through an innovative perspective. Fine Art Asia also takes a major role in promoting intangible cultural heritage, shedding light on the spirit of craftsmanship and cultural significance. Another fair highlight includes the debut of “Collectible Design – Asia Edition Pavilion”, showcasing a selection of outstanding collectible design items from Hong Kong, Mainland China, and other Asian cities. It aims to celebrate the magnificent blend of great design minds of designers and the exquisite skills of artisans, exemplifying the perfect marriage of design and art in a contemporary context and reflecting relevant cultures.

Renowned international antique galleries returning to the fair include Carlton Rochell Asian Art, New York, and Rossi & Rossi, Hong Kong/London, presenting a joint exhibition of the masterpieces from the Himalayas; Luohan Tang, Hong Kong/Paris, showcasing an impressive cross-collection of classical Chinese furniture and contemporary art; Maria Kiang Chinese Art, Hong Kong, exhibiting a diverse array of exquisite objects for a scholar’s desk.

Esmé Parish Silver, Hong Kong/Singapore returns with fine antique silver, highlighting a collection of Chinese export silverware dating back to the 19th century; Sue Ollemans, London with Indian, Chinese, and Southeast Asian jewellery; and Somlo, London with antique timepieces, featuring precious watches by Patek Philippe and Piaget.

In the art section, Yumekoubou, Kyoto/Hong Kong/Paris exhibits works by several established Japanese artists, and refined bamboo sculptural works by esteemed bamboo artist Tanabe Chikuunsai IV. The Gallery by SOIL, Hong Kong presents a special collection of contemporary lacquer paintings and works of art. The other notable Hong Kong galleries that feature contemporary ink art include Kwai Fung Hin Art Gallery which presents works by renowned artists such as Lalan, Bai Ming, and Li Huayi; Hanart TZ Gallery with works by prominent artists such as Luis Chan, Ju Ming, and Yu Peng; Grotto Fine Art exhibits works by both established and emerging artists including Hung Fai, Wai Pong yu, Ling Pui Sze, and Shum Kwan Yi. Anna Ning Fine Art presents modern and contemporary works by renowned artists Zao Wou-ki and Ma Jun. Moreover, Chelesa Art Co. Ltd., Hong Kong/Shanghai exhibits works by respected Chinese Buddhist monk Yue Zheng, and acclaimed artists Stewart Wong and Huang Jiamo; while Pine’s Art, Shanghai/Taipei with calligraphy works by a group of celebrated artists, including Chang Ch’ung-ho, Tung Chiao and Lu Xiaoman.

This year, we are thrilled to welcome two new galleries from Hong Kong: AEfolio and Young Soy Gallery. In their debuts, AEfolio showcases sophisticated glass art, offering visitors refreshing ideas for their collections. Meanwhile, Young Soy Gallery adds an energetic vibe to the fair with works by artists from diverse backgrounds and ideologies.

Special Exhibitions at Fine Art Asia 2024
Timeless Echoes
The special exhibition “Timeless Echoes” aims to build upon the concept of the fusion that enriches our understanding of the past and the present. This exhibition seeks to present organic, resonant creations through in-depth research and the selection of artworks that embody the interplay of forms and spirits, evoking a sense of artistic lineage and heritage. These works may be antiques with contemporary elements incorporated, or contemporary pieces featuring traditional motifs or craftsmanship. 

Through this experimental approach, we hope to imbue Fine Art Asia 2024 with a distinctive character and a sense of timeless artistry.

Hong Kong Once Was
What Did Hong Kong Look Like in the 1950s?
Step back in time to the vibrant streets of post-war Hong Kong. In this era, traditional values coexisted with the rapid changes brought about by economic growth.

Boogie Woogie Photography and PhotogStory are pleased to present an exclusive collection of photographs by Raymond Cauchetier, Fan Ho, and James Chung. Their pictures provide a unique opportunity to explore a city in transformation, showcasing the cultural fusion and daily lives of Hong Kong’s residents during this pivotal era. The resilience and ingenuity, as depicted in these images, laid the groundwork for the dynamic metropolis we know today.

ink+: Immersive World
We are committed to nurturing emerging young artists, offering an international platform to shine and be recognised. Curated by the seasoned scholar and veteran curator Mr Eric Leung, the “ink +” project will invite young talents from Hong Kong, Macau, and Mainland China. The exhibition, titled “Immersive World”, features a wide variety of artworks that employ new media and different materials, offering new interpretations of traditional ink painting.

A Tribute to Fang Zhaoling
In the eighth edition of their annual “Tribute Series”, The Ink Society presents A Tribute to Fang Zhaoling at Fine Art Asia 2024 to honour the legacy of a singular female painter in the history of modern Chinese art. A native of Wuxi, Fang Zhaoling (1914-2006) learned from masters Qian Songyan and Chen Jiucun in her teenage years, and later followed the Lingnan School before becoming a sworn disciple of modern pioneer Zhang Daqian. Well-versed in ancient Chinese literature, calligraphy, and painting, Fang also embraced new ideas from studying in the West and her expansive travels to develop an original style that preserved the spirit of ink and brush while responding to the tides of time. With a selection spanning the 1950s to 1990s, this exhibition surveys Fang’s defining artistic phases in her prolific career.
