Red Rainstorm Warning in force with over 200 mm of rainfall in Tseung Kwan O

The Red Rainstorm Warning and Thunderstorm Warning are now in force as the observatory says rainfall is exceeding 50 millimeters an hour and is likely to continue. 

The warnings were issued at 8.55 am and 5 am respectively. The weather watchdog also further issued the Landslip Warning at 10.30 am. 

The observatory said an upper-air disturbance is bringing heavy showers and squally thunderstorms to the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary. 

Meanwhile, a fresh to strong easterly airstream is affecting the coast of Guangdong. 

Locally, until noon, more than 50 millimeters of rainfall was recorded over the eastern part of the territory and Lantau Island, with rainfall even exceeding 200 millimeters over Tseung Kwan O and Sai Kung. 

At an open air car park at Tseung Kwan O industrial estate, the water level was seen reaching the cars at mid height. On Wan Po Road, a car was forced to stop before the flooded road with its hazard lights on. 

The Transport Department earlier announced that due to flooding, all lanes on Ying Yip Road (both bounds) and parts of Wan Po Road (both bounds) have been closed to traffic. 

Parents, students, school authorities and school-bus drivers are reminded to listen to radio or television announcements on schools. People who have to travel should carefully consider the weather and road conditions and take necessary precautions. 

Citizens are also advised to stay away from watercourses. Residents living in close proximity to rivers should stay alert to weather conditions and should consider evacuation if their homes become flooded.
