The government may consider delivering night-time consumption coupons to boost the economy together with the business sector, the Chinese Manufacturers' Association of Hong Kong (CMA) suggested, as the Budget is set to be delivered next month.
The president of CMA, Lo Kam-wing, said on a radio program that the change in lifestyle habits following the global pandemic has led to citizens returning home early and not shopping at night.
"The coupons could boost pedestrian flows and also the business at night," Lo said. "When merchants do more business, more taxes would contribute to the government."
He continued that it is worthwhile to make short-term investments if the contribution can help the long-term development of the whole economy.
Regarding the government's plan to develop the Northern Metropolis University Town, Lo - who is also a member of the Council of Baptist University - believed the Northern Metropolis is an excellent additional option for institutions since most of the universities are located in urban areas with not enough space to develop their research or programs.
