A case of counterfeit banknote usage occurred in Kwun Tong, where a woman was arrested for attempting to deposit two million US dollars in banknotes.
A woman who entered the country with a foreign passport held two banknotes with a face value of "one million US dollars" each and went into a bank on 71 Hoi Yuen Road in Kwun Tong yesterday (Dec 21) to deposit them.
The staff found the two banknotes suspicious and called the police.
The police arrived at the scene and seized the two suspected counterfeit banknotes with a total face value of approximately US$2 million from the 55-year-old woman surnamed Jiang.
After a preliminary investigation, she was arrested on suspicion of using counterfeit banknotes and is currently remanded in police custody to assist in the investigation.
The case was handed over to the Kwun Tong district police for follow-up.
After checking the information, it is understood that there are seven denominations of US dollar banknotes in circulation, namely 100, 50, 20, 10, 5, 2, and 1.
In the history of the United States, US dollar bills have also been issued in denominations of 500, 1000, 5000, 10,000, and 100,000 US dollars.
However, the 100,000 USD banknotes were not circulated among the public and were mainly used for settlement transactions between the Federal Reserve Bank and the US Treasury Department.
