Cheung said he has submitted a letter to the Home Affairs Department on Thursday for his resignation, effective on Friday (October 22).
He said that he could not fulfill the promises he made to his supporters because of "considerable health problems," and it was the right time for him to resign and think about how to continue serving Hong Kong people in the future.
He also apologized for not being able to complete his four-year term, and thanked his colleagues and volunteers for helping his office operations and for contributing to the community over the past few years.
Three months ago, Cheung posted on Facebook saying he would serve residents until the last minute. But he underwent operations to solve his gastrointestinal problems in the past two weeks and found a small tumor in his liver.
His office will continue operations until October 31. He will also provide limited enquiry services in the future.
