UK developer Latimer announced plans to roll out at least 10,000 affordable homes across Greater Manchester over the next decade, to be sold under a shared ownership scheme benefiting holders of the British National (Overseas) visa.

Shared ownership is a government-backed housing scheme in the United Kingdom that allows first-time buyers to purchase a share of a property – typically between 10 percent and 75 percent – while paying rent on the remaining portion to a landlord, aiming to help those who cannot afford a full mortgage or deposit.

UK developers are required to allocate a portion of new projects for affordable housing, as part of their social responsibility obligations.

Latimer's upcoming developments at Furness Quay in Salford and Islington Wharf in central Manchester will include shared ownership units alongside private homes for sale.

The Islington Wharf development will offer 106 one- and two-bedroom apartments, with 54 units available under the shared ownership scheme and the rest for private sale.
