Tung will be succeeded by Bernard Charnwut Chan, former convener of the Executive Council's nonofficial members during Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor's administration.
"Since founding Our Hong Kong Foundation in 2014, Tung has given his all to further its mission. Under his leadership and guided by his wisdom, the foundation has grown from strength to strength," the foundation said.
"Tung's contribution to the foundation is unique and we are delighted he will continue his contribution in his capacity as honorary chairman."
Chan, 58, has a distinguished public service record in a wide range of capacities, the foundation said.He was a Hong Kong deputy to the National People's Congress from 2018 to 2023, Exco convener between 2017 and 2022, and a lawmaker representing the insurance sector between 1998 and 2008.
Chan was also the foundation's vice chairman in 2017 and executive vice chairman in 2022.Chan has helped lead the foundation "on a path of remarkable success," it said.
"The board is confident that Chan, with his sterling record of public service and leadership, will build on the foundation's solid achievements and lead it to scale new heights in serving Hong Kong and contributing to the country."However, the move has further raised concerns about Tung, the first chief executive after the handover from 1997 to 2005.
Tung recently retired as vice chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference after 18 years. He was admitted to Queen Mary Hospital in 2021 for a heart surgery when he collapsed while attending the opening ceremony of the NPC in Beijing. He has been absent for the handover anniversary festivities and other activities since 2020.
