A dazzling winter wonderland awaits in Macao

From mesmerizing installations brightening iconic landmarks to Christmas markets aplenty and the world-touring Harry Potter exhibition, discover Macao's dazzling festive wonders

This winter season, Macao glistens with a captivating mix of lights, magic and holiday cheer. From December 2023 through late February 2024, the marquee event “Light up Macao 2023” illuminates the city through extensive light installations and projection mapping shows across iconic landmarks.

Concurrent with the illumination, festive Christmas markets and fairs stocked with local artistry pop up to spread goodwill. And for ardent Potterheads, the highly-anticipated Harry Potter™: The Exhibition promises an immersive behind-the-scenes experience from mid-December at The Londoner Macao, taking visitors through the beloved films’ most magical moments.

A dazzling wonderland comes to life

“Light up Macao 2023” shines as Macao’s largest light festival yet through its dazzling mixture of art and technology, along with plenty of community spirit and festivities. Themed as “Dazzling Wonderland”, residents and visitors can explore 36 light installations, 20 interactive installations and three mapping show venues across Macao’s locations from December 2, 2023, through to February 25, 2024.

Organized by the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) in collaboration with the city’s six integrated resort enterprises, including Galaxy Entertainment, Sands China, MGM, Wynn, Melco, and SJM Resorts, 34 locations across seven districts receive customized lighting brought to life through boundless creativity.

An eclectic range of installations will transform iconic buildings and public spaces into shimmering works of art, certain to draw delighted crowds each evening from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. In the bustling Central District, keep an eye out for the sprouting blooms, while Praia do Manduco District comes alive with a light extravaganza, and Nam Van Lake plays backdrop to dancing butterflies and wonders of nature.

The installations at NAPE offer a journey through the universe, whereas Macao’s north streets glitter for happy wanderers. Taipa and Coloane, too, receive their own illuminating ambience, from fairylands to local tributes.

Elsewhere, three mapping shows will illuminate cherished landmarks with animated projections designed by teams from Macao, Korea’s Seoul, and mainland China’s Wuhan – the latter two being UNESCO Creative Cities of Design.

The front square of Macao Science Center and Largo dos Bombeiros in Taipa will be aglow under swirling colors every half hour from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. every night, while the historic Chapel of St. Francis Xavier in Coloane glows with imagination every 15 minutes from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on select evenings.

Even better, interactive games online and shared photos offer visitors chances to collect stamps, win prizes and spread the joyous spirit of the celebrations. Outreach activities around the communities will bring neighborhoods together and offer a feast for the eye and the soul.

“Light up! F’art for U”, for instance, combines performance art with light installations. “Luminescent Night at Travessa do Armazém Velho 2023” promises to bring the streets and lanes to life after dark. Walls will also be transformed into “Snowy Wonderlands” brimming with holiday cheer and surprise.

Concurrent markets and craft fairs offer even more reasons to explore Macao. In addition to the “Colourful Christmas Carnival Coloane Winter Craftsman Market”, the “Creative Camp Marketplace” will turn Praca da Amizade into a festive camping wonderland of artisan goods, live music and creative workshops where visitors can craft their own souvenirs.

Christmas markets spark festive cheer

During the festive season, lively markets will pop up across Macao to immerse residents and visitors in the holiday spirit and community celebration.

At the flagship “2023 Christmas Market” in Tap Seac Square, visitors will be enthralled by its 28 booths filled with gifts, snacks and local handicrafts from December 16, 2023, to January 1, 2024. Adding to the magic, the charming “Christmas Chalets” grace the picturesque boulevard, while the gaming areas and live interactive performances enchant young and old.

Meanwhile, the beloved “7th Carmo Christmas Festivities” on December 17 spreads its merry spirit through 13 booths of creative products and diverse cuisines. Curated to engage visitors of every age, workshops, interactive games and stage performances will unfold daily to imbue warmth and seasonal goodwill.

Step into the magical worlds of Harry Potter

For devoted Potterheads and casual Wizarding World fans alike, a must-see destination awaits in Macao. Opening its doors on December 15, The Londoner Macao will house the long-anticipated Harry Potter™: The Exhibition, transporting visitors behind the scenes of the beloved film franchise Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts. After 1.6 million global visitors, this record-breaking exhibition is certain to delight through charming environments and innovative technologies.

Celebrate Barra Station’s Opening

To celebrate the official opening of Barra Station in Macao Light Rapid Transit, free limited-edition memorabilia will be distributed to the first 500 passengers going through Exit A between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. on December 8, 2023.
