The 44th Hong Kong Film Awards nominations were unveiled on Tuesday (Feb 10), with Louis Koo Tin-lok earning a double nod for Best Actor and facing off against Tony Leung Ka-fai and Louis Cheung Kai-chung, while Zhang Ziyi and Fala Chen headline a tight Best Actress race.
Actress-turned-director Shu Qi secured multiple behind-the-scenes nominations for her directorial debut Girl, landing spots in Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best New Director.
Among shortlisted films, Sons of the Neon Night received the most nominations with 12. Director Juno Mak is in contention for Best Film and Best Art Direction, and is again nominated for Best New Director. Back to the Past and Ciao UFO also picked up more than 10 nominations each.
A total of 47 films qualified for this year’s awards, according to the eligibility list released in January. Four eligible titles — Valley of the Shadow of Death, Finch and Midland, Vital Signs and Mother Bhumi — were not included in the initial round of consideration, sparking discussion.
An emotional moment marked the press conference when actress Michelle Wai Sze-nga broke into tears while reading the Best Actor nominations after her friend Carlos Chan Ka-lok earned his first nod for Some One Like Me, briefly struggling to continue as she announced his name.
This year’s awards ceremony will be held on April 19 at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.
