Thirty-one directors of Hong Kong-listed companies earned more than HK$100 million each in total compensation last year, with Li Auto (2015) founder Li Xiang topping the pay league at nearly HK$680 million, according to the ranking by financial website Webb-site.
The website, founded by Hong Kong activist investor David Webb, said the ranking is the database’s “final project,” compiling directors' pay data since the Hong Kong Stock Exchange began requiring named disclosure in 2005.
JS Global Lifestyle (1691) chairman Wang Xuning and J&T Global Express (1519) founder Jet Li Jie ranked second and third, each earning around HK$520 million.
JS Global Lifestyle’s market capitalization stood at just HK$6.15 billion at yesterday's close, meaning Wang’s HK$520 million pay and its chief executive Han Run’s HK$250 million compensation together exceed 10 percent of the company’s market value. Company filings show that the bulk of their pay comes from share awards, a pattern seen across the ranking’s top 10 earners.
By contrast, Victor Li Tzar-kuoi, chairman of CK Hutchison (0001) and ranked 11th, received no share awards last year. His HK$212 million compensation came entirely from salary, benefits, bonuses, and retirement arrangements.
New World Development (0017) chairman Henry Cheng Kar-shun ranked 32nd with total compensation of HK$98.8 million, just HK$1.17 million shy of the HK$100 million mark, down two places from a year earlier when he earned nearly HK$110 million.
HSBC (0005) chief executive Georges Elhedery, who was promoted to the top job in September 2024, ranked 23rd with total pay of about HK$130 million — a sharp jump from his HK$57.6 million package as chief financial officer in 2023, when he placed 86th.
