Hong Kong stocks closed higher on Tuesday, supported by optimism over a potential easing in US-China trade tensions and ahead of the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision on Thursday.
The benchmark Hang Seng Index rose 158 points, or 0.7 percent, to close at 22,662 on Tuesday, marking its fourth straight day of gains.
Turnover surged to HK$213.3 billion, up nearly 59.55 percent from the previous session and hitting its highest since April 23.
The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index added 30 points, or 0.37 percent, to 8,261 while the Hang Seng Tech Index slipped 0.09 percent to 5,239.
Shares of Chinese oil majors were mixed despite international oil prices falling to their lowest level in more than four years. CNOOC (0883) dropped 1.19 percent and PetroChina (0857) declined 0.51 percent while China Petroleum and Chemical (0386) edged up 0.25 percent.
In the mainland, the Shanghai Composite Index rose 1.13 percent to close at 3,316 points, while the Shenzhen Component Index gained 1.84 percent, ending the day at 10,082.
