A YouTuber who actively promoted JPEX, a cryptocurrency platform that was said to be investigated by the authorities for suspected fraud, was arrested in a police operation that saw six being caught on Monday, according to sources.
Chan Wing-yee, commonly known as “Chan Yee,” was arrested today with her over-the-counter crypto trading shop at Wing On Plaza in Tsim Sha Tsui being cordoned off this morning.
She was one of the six arrestees - four men and two women - taken away by the officers in a case related to the cryptocurrency exchange platform.
It was learned that the police have received 1,408 complaints on JPEX as of 2pm on Monday, with the money involved amounting to HK$1 billion.
Chan has over 221,000 followers on her YouTube channel, focusing on investment and business news.
She recently actively promoted JPEX and even claimed that the platform was under “persecution” in her video published last Saturday (Sep 16), the same day the police said it had received reports regarding JPEX.
The arrest also came after the police nabbed another social media influencer, Joseph Lam Chok, this morning concerning the investigation of JPEX.
It was learned that Lam and Chan were both arrested for conspiracy to defraud.
Separately, police officers searched several crypto trading shops across the city, including one in Wan Chai and one in Kennedy Town, which were said to be operated by some influencers.
