A Chinese illegal immigrant was critically wounded after being shot by police during an alleged assault in Milan on Sunday, Italian media reported.
Corriere della Sera reported the 30-year-old Liu surnamed man, who was living in Italy illegally with no registered address, attempted to steal a folding knife and attacked others with a makeshift weapon before the main incident.
Near the city's Winter Olympic sports arena, he allegedly assaulted a security guard with a stick, seized his firearm, and engaged in a shootout with police. He reportedly fired at least three shots, hitting a patrol car. Police returned fire, striking him in the head and shoulder.
The man was hospitalized in critical condition and in a coma. No officers were injured. The report said he had committed three offenses in four days and had been reported for suspicious behavior. An investigation is ongoing.
