A viral moment at a Coldplay concert has transformed an ordinary bartender into an internet sensation—and assisted her in paying off US$80,000 (around HK$620,000) in student loans.
The incident began when Grace Springer, a 27-year-old bar server, recorded an awkward confrontation between Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and the company’s HR director during the band’s Hong Kong show. The clip, which showed the pair being publicly exposed for an alleged affair, quickly went viral on TikTok, amassing over 120 million views.
While the scandal led to the resignation of the two executives, Springer capitalized on the moment for a financial breakthrough—without earning a single cent directly from TikTok.
Social media marketing expert Estelle Keeber, founder of Immoral Monkey, estimated that Springer could have earned up to £144,000 (HK$1.51 million) based on standard rates of £800–£1,200 per million views if she had been part of TikTok’s Creator Fund.
However, Springer was not enrolled in the program. Instead, she chose a different route by directly asking the internet for assistance.
Springer updated her social media bio with a request for help in paying her student loans, along with links to her Venmo and CashApp accounts. The response was extraordinary.
Springer mentioned that the video did not earn her any money directly, but she was amazed by people's reactions. Within days, donations came flooding in, completely erasing her $80,000 debt.
Now debt-free, Springer is planning to launch her own online commentary show, where she will discuss current affairs and pop culture. She expressed her desire not to dwell on this single clip indefinitely but to use it as a springboard.
From bartender to internet entrepreneur—all thanks to a concert scandal she never anticipated.
