Hong Kong tennis player Coleman Wong Chak-lam created history on Thursday by advancing to the third round of the US Open qualifying tournament, moving within one victory of becoming the first Hong Kong male player to reach a Grand Slam main draw.
The 21-year-old battled back from a set down to defeat Italy's Matteo Gigante (world No. 131) 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 in a thrilling match that lasted two hours and fifteen minutes. Wong's comeback victory marked his deepest ever run in a Grand Slam qualifying tournament after previously exiting in the second round at both Australian Open and Wimbledon earlier this year.
