Shenzhen Bay Port saw a surge in travelers after 2am on New Year's Day as many mainland residents who celebrated in Hong Kong crossed back north overnight.

The border checkpoint operated overnight for the first time to accommodate New Year's Eve crowds. Many had attended countdown events or concerts in Hong Kong before heading to Shenzhen to return home or stay in hotels, citing lower prices on the mainland.

The port's flow gradually peaked in the early hours as streets and transport in Hong Kong cleared after celebrations.
