Surrounded by an enthusiastic home crowd, Hong Kong's fencer Edgar Cheung Ka-long advanced to the round of 16 in the men's foil individual at the 15th National Games.
In the morning match at the Kai Tak Arena, the Olympic gold medalist fencer secured a decisive 15-5 victory against Cao Bo from Anhui, earning his place in the next round.
Cheung will be joined by fellow top contender Ryan Choi Chun-yin -- the city's first fencing world champion -- who also advanced to the round of 16.
In the women's individual sabre, Hong Kong will be represented by Laren Leung Lok-man, 20-year-old rising star Summer Sit Fay, and Chu Wing-kiu.
The energy in the arena was palpable, fueled by young fencers and their families.
One young fan expressed his thrill at the team's strong start, while a parent described the National Games as "a grand event, too big to miss," echoing hopes for a dream final between teammates Cheung and Choi.
The round of 16 matches are set to begin at 2.40 pm, with anticipation building for more thrilling performances.
