Police fatally shot a knife-wielding man holding a hostage at Tuen Mun Town Plaza on Thursday night.
Officers received a report around 7pm today that a man in his 30s entered a Donki restaurant, took a sharp knife, and left.
When police arrived, they found him outside a restaurant in the plaza, still holding the knife and ignoring warnings.
Pepper spray was deployed first, but had no effect. The man then rushed into the mall area and took a female hostage.
Police fired two shots, hitting the suspect. He collapsed, was taken unconscious to Tuen Mun Hospital, and later died.
The hostage was safely rescued. The motive and circumstances remain under investigation.

A video circulating online shows helmeted officers subduing the suspect after the shots, with one colleague asking who fired.
The officer who discharged his weapon raised his hand and was taken aside by fellow officers.
