A fire caused by improper fireworks use led to a deadly explosion at a fireworks shop in Lianyungang, Jiangsu province, on Saturday, killing eight people and injuring two.
The incident occurred at around 2.30pm in Dong'an village, Shiliu township, Donghai county. A villager's improper handling of fireworks ignited a blaze that reached a nearby fireworks and firecracker retail outlet, causing a deflagration, according to state media.
Emergency response teams, firefighters, police, and health workers were dispatched to the scene. The fire was extinguished by approximately 4pm.
The death toll stands at eight, with two others sustaining minor burns. Relevant individuals responsible have been detained. Investigations into the exact cause and follow-up arrangements are underway.
The incident occurred as many people use fireworks to celebrate the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday.
