Baseball5, or B5, is a dynamic urban sport played by two teams of five players each, with three substitutes. It shares many rules with traditional baseball and softball but is played in a smaller, more compact environment, making it accessible and fast-paced.
The inaugural WBSC Baseball5 World Cup was held in Mexico in 2022, where Cuba, Japan, and Chinese Taipei emerged as top performers, with Hong Kong finishing in 12th place. The upcoming tournament in Hong Kong not only represents a significant milestone in local sports development but also highlights the city's unique urban charm and hospitality.
The event is set to feature 12 world-class teams from five continents, including Tunisia and South Africa from Africa; Cuba, Mexico, and Venezuela from the Americas; Japan, Chinese Taipei, China, and host Hong Kong from Asia; France and Lithuania from Europe; and Australia from Oceania. These teams will compete over six days, from October 7 to 12, 2024, at the Central Harbourfront Event Space.
The WBSC aims to use this tournament to promote Baseball5, combining the essence of traditional baseball with the energy of modern athletics. Tickets for the event are now available for purchase on Klook, with prices ranging from HK$280 to HK$1180. Limited tickets are available, and attendees can also enjoy various associated activities that demonstrate why Baseball5 is captivating sports fans globally.
In conjunction with the tournament, the Hong Kong Baseball Association and the Hong Kong Jockey Club are launching the "Jockey Club Baseball5 Community Program."
This initiative seeks to engage more students and grassroots participants by offering diverse activities and workshops to deepen their understanding of Baseball5. Participants will have the opportunity to learn essential skills from professional coaches, fostering a love for the sport and enhancing its local impact.
