Legislative Council President Andrew Leung Kwan-yuen is currently leading a delegation on a week-study visit to Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore.
The primary objective of the visit is to strengthen the friendship and cooperation between Hong Kong and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations countries.
The delegation comprises seven members of the Legco Parliamentary Liaison Subcommittee, including Tommy Cheung Yu-yan, a lawmaker representing the catering sector, Jeffrey Lam Kin-fung and Yim Kong from the commercial sector, Nixie Lam Lam, Tang Fei, and Carmen Kan Wai-mun from the Election Committee, as well as Federation of Trade Unions lawmaker Joephy Chan Wing-yan.
Leung said the delegation's aim is to explore new opportunities for Hong Kong's economic development in Asean, given the region's close ties and significant trade partnership with Hong Kong.
The visit has a tight schedule, encompassing various areas such as commerce, trade, digital economy, housing, transportation, arts and culture, as well as tourism.
Upon their arrival in Kuala Lumpur, the delegation met with the Malaysian Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, and engaged in fruitful discussions with representatives of the Hong Kong-Malaysia Business Association. These engagements aimed to gain insights into the challenges and opportunities faced by Hong Kong businessmen operating in Asean.
In addition to interacting with government departments and organizations, the delegation plans to meet with local speakers and members of parliament to foster parliamentary exchange and deepen mutual understanding.
They will also visit the Chinese ambassadors in each country and engage with local Hong Kong businessmen and overseas Chinese communities to stay updated on the latest political systems, economic and tourism developments, as well as advancements in innovation, technology and emerging industries.
"Previous visits by lawmakers to the mainland resulted in fruitful policy proposals," Leung said. "Therefore, the delegation is commited to bringing back valuable observations and insights back to Legco, aiming to facilitate economic and trade cooperation between Hong Kong and Asean, ultimately contributing to the overall development and prosperity of the region."
