As the spring mist settles over Victoria Harbour, a different kind of electricity is beginning to hum across the 40 hectares of the West Kowloon Cultural District (WestK). This isn’t just the usual buzz of weekend picnickers or museum-goers; it is the focused energy of a city preparing to host the world’s artistic elite. On 22 to 23 March, the second Hong Kong International Cultural Summit (HKICS) will officially kick off Hong Kong Art Week 2026, signalling that the city’s cultural ambitions have moved far beyond simply building world-class galleries.
Under the theme “A New Era: Reimagining Community through the Arts,” this year’s summit brings together nearly 30 of the most influential “shakers and movers” in the global arts scene. We aren’t just talking about local enthusiasts; we are talking about the heads of the Guggenheim, the MoMA, and the Southbank Centre. These leaders from 14 countries and regions are converging on our harbourfront to discuss a fundamental shift: how can a museum or a performance centre be more than just a building?
For the average Hongkonger, the “Summit” might sound like a closed-door affair for the suits, but the implications for our daily life are tangible. A major highlight of this edition is the debut of a dedicated Performing Arts panel. With the WestK Performing Arts Centre (WestK PAC) nearing completion, the discussion is expanding beyond galleries to the live, breathing rhythm of performance. Leaders from legendary venues like London’s Sadler’s Wells and France’s Chaillot – National Theatre of Dance will explore how these new spaces can become “dynamic cultural hubs” that actually talk to the community, rather than just performing at them.
This isn’t just talk, either. Including partnerships forged at the first summit in 2024, WestK has since signed 34 international partnerships that are now bearing fruit on our doorsteps. Because of these global handshakes, local audiences have enjoyed blockbuster exhibitions including “Picasso for Asia—A Conversation” co-organised by M+ and the Musée national Picasso-Paris and the stunning “Treasures of the Mughal Court” at the Hong Kong Palace Museum, co-organised with the Victoria and Albert Museum. Even more exciting is the debut of a first project arising from the partnership between M+ and MoMA in August this year. These aren’t just exhibitions; they are proof of Hong Kong’s solidified role as the “East-meets-West” hub for cultural exchange.

While the core summit sessions take place at the Xiqu Centre, M+, and the Hong Kong Palace Museum, the spirit of the event is designed to spill out into the Art Park and the rest of Hong Kong. Participants and the public alike will find themselves immersed in a city-wide celebration, from the high-concept booths of Art Basel and Art Central to the family-friendly WestK FunFest presented by WestK Performing Arts, featuring a large-scale interactive art installation of cats at the Harbourside East Lawn.
As Bernard Charnwut Chan, Chairman of the WKCDA, notes, the goal is to solidify this summit as a “flagship gathering” on the global calendar. For Hong Kong, it is a moment of pride. We are no longer just a stop on a tour; we are the curators of the conversation. Whether you are a dedicated art collector or a family taking a stroll along the promenade, HKICS 2026 proves that the future of the global arts community is being written right here, against the backdrop of our iconic skyline.
