In a sweeping operation across the city, the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department(FEHD) has inspected over 200 fresh provision shops(FPSs), issuing 47 warnings and 21 prosecutions for mishandled pig carcasses and associated rodent risks.
Conducted from late February to early March, the city-wide operation targeted early morning meat deliveries at FPSs.
Among those inspected, Yuen Long's Kai Bo Food Supermarket was found breaching licensing conditions last Wednesday (Mar 4) after inspectors discovered pig carcasses stored outside the premises.
The FEHD has since initiated proceedings with the cancellation of the FPS’s license.
Separately, the FEHD reported that an immediate closure order issued on January 24 at a fresh provision shop in Kowloon City District remains in effect. The shop will only be allowed to reopen once the FEHD is satisfied with its hygiene conditions.
Although the shop has repeatedly requested the lifting of the closure order, all requests have been rejected as its rodent control measures remain unsatisfactory.
The FEHD reaffirmed its commitment to conducting regular inspections of fresh provision shops to target poor hygiene practices and combat potential rodent infestations.
Upcoming operations—including late-night blitz inspections—will be undertaken across various districts, where immediate closure orders or license revocations will be issued if shops are found mishandling pig carcasses.
