Tseung Kwan O residents will soon have a new place to unwind and play as the second phase of Tseung Kwan O South Park opens on Thursday, bringing a new children’s playground, bike park and green space to the waterfront neighborhood.
The park’s first phase, which opened to the public last June, introduced two basketball courts, jogging paths and open recreational areas. The newly completed second phase adds a central lawn, a children’s playground, a children’s cycling track, changing rooms and public toilets, expanding the park into a more family-friendly destination.
The children’s playground will be open daily from 7am to 11pm, offering young visitors more space to run, climb and explore.
However, some sections damaged during Super Typhoon Ragasa last September remain under repair and will not be accessible when the park reopens.
Ahead of the opening, Sai Kung district councilor Chris Cheung Mei-hung shared a short video online giving residents an early look at the new facilities.
In the clip, Cheung highlighted the central lawn, noting that it was designed using a “sponge city” concept that allows the ground to absorb and release rainwater during heavy storms.
The video also showed the children’s playground, which features wooden climbing towers, an aerial zip-line area, swings, trampolines and sand-play zones. An ornamental pond sits nearby, creating what Cheung described as a play environment that combines land, air and water elements for children of different ages.
The preview quickly drew attention online, with many residents welcoming the addition of a large and modern community space in the area.
Some commenters said the park would give families more room to relax and spend time together, while others raised practical questions about on-site security and whether the structures could withstand future typhoons.
Responding to inquiries, Cheung also clarified that pets are allowed in the park, although they will not be permitted on the central lawn.
